Health & Safety:

Why hire a professional where working at heights is required?

"Falls from height remain the most common kind of workplace fatality" -1

By law, ensuring operative safety is a responsibility of the client.

"Health and safety responsibilities are defined by the criminal law and cannot be passed on from one party to another by a contract. In any client/contractor relationship, both parties will have duties under health and safety law” -2

The Risks of working at heights – Statistically speaking:

"In the construction industry alone there were 23 workers killed, and 3,409 seriously injured after falling from height (in 2007) -3, a startling figure for an industry which specialises in the field. The most common causes for these accidents usually stem from one of the following:

  • Safety mechanisms, such as roof anchors, not being correctly installed/certified
  • Safety mechanisms not being in place at all
  • Operatives not using the safety equipment provided for them
  • Operatives not receiving the appropriate training

In short working at heights is considered and known to be dangerous work, and its safety aspects are not to be taken lightly or overlooked. What you may have been unaware of is that it is not only the contractors who are obliged to ensure that these risks are managed appropriately; As a client you are also legally bound to take steps to ensure the health and safety of contractors employees who work on your buildings.
